NUNAVUT TUNNGAVIK INC.
Pieter van Gils and Dominique Collin investigated how Nunavut can adapt and replicate financial models that have demonstrated success in other Indigenous communities and have moved people from thinking of housing as a service provided by governments to thinking of housing as an asset. The authors selected financial solutions from Indigenous housing models in Canada and Alaska. They described the genesis, governance structure, objectives, targets, activities, capital deployed, impacts, sources of capital, financial viability, and risk tolerance of the solutions; analysed what the factors are that sustain the success of the models, as well as what the challenges are in sustaining them; and finally, proposed how the models could be applied to Nunavut.
